We are often told that we have everything at the tip of our fingers. With the rise of the internet, this is now true more than ever before. However, it has created its own problem. Too many options leaves you with making an even harder choice. There are too many options to choose from so it can be hard to find the 'right' one. In this article, I will show you a few things to look out for when searching for your children's online Quran teacher.

The language of communication

The first thing to look out for before getting an education service (be it an online Quran teaching platform or otherwise) from ANYONE is the language of communication and how well versed they are in that language. The last thing we need is a highly qualified teacher but they can not communicate in the language your child understands. This is one of the reasons why The Quran Hour is solely an English speaking Quran platform. All of the teachers are fluent and well versed in the English language, therefore ideal for children who have English as their first language.

Qualifications in the field of Quran teaching

To be qualified in teaching the Quran does not necessarily mean that one must be a graduate of Al-Azhar university especially when it comes to teaching children. Most children require someone who can teach the very basics of Arabic which will in turn help them to read the Quran with pronunciation. Most of us aren't hiring online teachers looking for our children to become Qaris, we just need someone who knows the basics to a good degree. Therefore, it is not necessary for the teacher to be a graduate of Al-Azhar university. However it is still very important that you get your hands on someone who is qualified to a certain level. The only qualifications you will need from a teacher that qualifies them to teach basic Quran, is the qualification of 'Ijaza.' Ijaza is the 'permission' that a teacher receives from another qualified teacher. These aren't given out willy-nilly so they are a positive indicator that you have a good teacher at hand. You can get more information on what an ijaza is here.

Experience as a teacher

If the two above steps have been gaged, then the next step would be to see if the said teacher has any experience in teaching children. It is vital to hire teachers that have experience in teaching children the Quran online as its a whole different ball-game. The methods in teaching children requires skill and experience and without this we find that much time will be wasted hiring someone who does not have these attributes.

DBS/CRB checked teachers

Last but not least, a CRB check is very important. Most Muslims shy away from this because ''how can a noble Quran teacher have a criminal record'' but we live in a time where we can never be too sure- especially when we are allowing our children to be taught 1 to 1 in front of a stranger. Its never too hard to produce these documents so if anyone denies your request for a CRB check, then move on to finding another tutor. Better safe than sorry!

Final thoughts

If you want to find a good online Quran teacher for your children, then follow the above steps in order. Finding a well spoken teacher who can communicate well with your child whilst possessing good teaching skills will help to engage and keep your child's relationship with the Quran very healthy. With the right qualifications your children will get a good grip on reciting the Quran; an ability which will stay with them forever. A safe environment is vital, so closing off your vetting process with a clean CRB check puts you in the hands of someone who will benefit your child immensely!
