We live in a time where there are so many different forms of entertainment that it is becoming ever so difficult to keep track of what our children consume. In this article we will be discussing what we can do as parents to encourage our children to study the Quran & Islam.

Use their favourite device

If your child is glued to an iPad, or if they can't get off YouTube, rather than telling them to go and pick up the Quran to read it, download the Quran on their favourite gadget. Let your child listen to the Quran on YouTube or find a video that will motivate them to start learning the Quran.

Incentivise

As humans, we always do something in order to gain something in the end. Even with being a good Muslim we do it so that we can attain the pleasures of heaven. However, its difficult to communicate this to children. Therefore, understand what they like most, and reward them with it once they complete a certain task that requires them to read the Quran or learn more about Islam.

Practice what you preach!

The biggest influence a child will have in their lives will be your actions as parents. If you are telling them to read the Quran or to take online Quran classes to better their pronunciation, you must be doing it yourself. As a father or a mother, you will be looked up to and you will be judged by your children whether you like it or not. If you tell your child to do something you don't do yourself, they will look at what you are asking them to do negatively.

Relatable content

We must note that children are different from adults. If you have come to a point in your life where you want to read the Quran for an hour, don't expect your children to share that same interest. Understand what your children are going through and what they will find relatable. If your child is going through puberty, then it is important that you teach them the Islamic understanding of puberty and what comes with it.

Final thoughts

We must understand that times have changed. To gain your child's interest we must use what they understand and like to get them to find an interest in Islam. The Quran Hour is a great platform for children to find relatable tutors and content that will help them to peak their interest in Islam and the Quran.
