Has your child ever come home and complained about having to go to the Madrassa? Does your child have to travel far to get to and from his/her school? Are the pressures of school work waning down on your child? Most of you reading will probably answer yes to the above questions. It is sad that although these are children we are talking about, their lives are becoming far from what a childs life should be. However, the realities force us as parents to adapt and get on with it. In this blog we will discuss how one can balance school and Quran learning so that your child doesn't neglect one or the other.

Mum and Dad, stop putting the pressure on!

Coming from a South-East Asian background, my parents started to really push us in to academia very early on. Our childhood was dominated by education and being the best in our school classes. Thats all we knew and due to this, I feel the pressure really took its toll on us. It effected other parts of our lives and it certainly had an effect on our Quran learning.

Mums and Dads, you need to notch it down a little. Stop expecting your child to do too much. Sure, they need to strive to be the best they can be but there comes a point where the expectations can start to weigh down on our children. If we can take a step back, then this will help to really allow our children to explore other parts of life like the Quran and Islam in general.

Put importance on the Quran

As mentioned above I think its safe to say that most parents reading this blog put a heavy emphasis on their children's school education. Although this should be managed, we sure don't give the same importance to the Quran.

Let your children know that the Quran is as, if not more, important than their school studies. Let your children know that Quran and education aren't mutually exclusive. If they excel in their Quran, then surely they will be assisted by Allah the Almighty in their education. This type of importance and encouragment will bring our children closer to the Quran.

Facilitate Online Quran Learning

We get it. Its unrealistic to expect your child to go to school and then to the Madrassa. Maybe 20 years ago it was possible, but now, with parents working it has become really hard for both parents and children. That does not mean we have to then exclude Quran learning altogther.

Thankfully, we have some great online Quran learning platforms for children where they can connect to qualified teachers. The Quran Hour facilitates children in this very predicament with top of the range English speaking Quran teachers.

Final Thoughts

In this increasingly demanding society, we acknowledge that it is becoming very hard to juggle Quran and school education but we must try as parents to maintain this balance. Implement the above points, along with your own methods, and bring back a healthy upbringing where school and Quran are given equal importance.
